Designing a business card is easy… until you actually sit down to do it. Suddenly, every font looks both “meh” and “maybe,” and you’re wondering if that QR code should be front and center or not at all.
This guide is here to help.

Whether you’re designing your card from scratch or customizing a template, here’s what to think about – from layout and font size to color choices and customer psychology.

The Essentials: What Should Be on Your Business Card?

  • Your name or business name – make it bold, make it confident.
  • Your role or service – so they know what you actually do.
  • Contact info – usually phone, email, website. Add social if relevant.
  • Optional tagline – a short phrase that adds personality or explains your specialty.

Front vs. Back: What Goes Where?

  • Front: Logo or industry graphic, name, main contact info
  • Back: Service list, short intro, QR code, social handles

Some people prefer everything on one side, but if you’re using both – think of the front as your handshake and the back as your conversation starter.

Typography: Sizes, Styles & Staying Sane

  • Minimum readable font size: 8pt
  • Ideal for body text: 9–11pt
  • Headlines or name: 14pt or larger
  • Avoid going smaller than 7pt unless you really don’t want to be read.

Stick to 1–2 font styles unless your brand is intentionally quirky or whimsical. Script fonts are beautiful but make sure they’re legible. Serif or sans-serif? Personal choice – just be consistent.

Think Like Your Customer

Ask yourself:

  • What does my client need to know?
  • What would help them feel confident reaching out?
  • What’s the one piece of info that might motivate them to call?

Often, it’s not the logo — it’s the clarity of what you do and how you help.

Service List or Short Intro?

A few bullets are great for trades or multi-service businesses:
🔧 Plumbing • Tiling • Repairs
🐾 Grooming • Nail Trims • Mobile Service

Or, if you prefer a softer intro:
“Offering holistic massage and energy work for women seeking balance and restoration.”

QR Code – To Include or Not?

✅ Include it if:

  • You have a booking link
  • Your website is detailed and mobile-friendly
  • You want to direct them to a portfolio or testimonials

📏 Minimum size: around 0.8 inches (2 cm) square for reliable scanning

Color Choices & Vibes

  • Green → Great for gardeners, eco services, wellness
  • Purple → Common in Reiki, spiritual work, or luxury feel
  • Blue → Reliable and calm – popular for services and tech
  • Neutrals → Classic and clean, especially for minimalist designs

Just make sure there’s enough contrast between text and background – a beautiful card is useless if it can’t be read.

Don’t Overcrowd

White space is your friend. Let your content breathe.
If you’re struggling to fit it all in, ask yourself:
Does this need to be here, or does it belong on my website?

This isn’t just a card – it’s a conversation starter, a first impression, and a mini billboard.
Make it beautiful, but also make it work.
